DarkThumbs 2.1 by fire-eggs is a lightweight Windows shell extension whose sole purpose is to populate Windows Explorer with instant thumbnail previews for electronic books and comic-style archives that otherwise appear only as generic icons. Once installed, the utility injects handlers for EPUB, FB2 and the complete Kindle family (MOBI, AZW, AZW3), as well as for DJVU documents and the sequential-art containers CBZ, CBR, CB7, plus everyday archives in 7Z, RAR and ZIP guises (including the education-oriented PHZ and GGB variants). The plug-in activates automatically when a folder is browsed, extracting and caching the first page or cover image so that users can visually distinguish titles without opening them, a convenience that proves valuable for digital libraries, comic collectors, students managing lecture notes in DJVU, or reviewers who need rapid visual confirmation of content before copying or uploading. Three public builds have appeared so far: v1.x delivered basic EPUB, FB2 and Kindle support, v2.0 widened the roster to DJVU and 7Z/CB7, and the present v2.1 repairs previously broken CB7 recognition and exposes it as an elective checkbox in the installer. The component runs on any Windows edition that still supports old-style thumbnail providers and occupies negligible RAM because it discards cached images once the folder is left. DarkThumbs is available for free on get.nero.com, with downloads provided via trusted Windows package sources (e.g. winget), always delivering the latest version, and supporting batch installation of multiple applications.
